To get your child ready to tackle 3rd grade math with confidence, it is time to introduce learning aids at home. Most parents assume that worksheets, word problems and visual representations are the most helpful tools, but many forget the importance of online tools that offer educational value. If you choose the right programs, you can help pave the way for success for your child by incorporating fun, challenging games that promote the learning and understanding of 3rd grade math. Many online math games are designed purely for entertainment and will not do much in terms of teaching your child. While these games can be fun and engaging for third graders, you want to choose games that will practice the skills being taught in school. Look for games and puzzles that are part of an adaptive learning program. This means that the online games are well-thought out and match the same set of skills that are being taught in the third grade curriculum. The program is structured toward each individual student and fills in the gaps where the child is struggling.

Many people are unaware that the Language Arts section of the Common Core standards has omitted cursive handwriting as a subject that must be taught. As it is not included in the Common Core Standards, cursive handwriting is relegated to a "as we have time" or "if we chose to teach it" position in the classroom. While many of the public schools have dropped it most of the private schools continue to teach it. The reduction in instruction time for cursive handwriting has slowly and subtlety taken place. Sometime in the 1980 has cursive handwriting began to receive less and less classroom instruction. It changed from the excessive two hours a day in the forties and fifties to the current fifteen minutes two or three times a week. Schools often start teaching cursive at the end of second grade and little instruction extends after the third grade.

With the Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y and Generation Z all having to interact and get along, it seems the characteristics above have swung the proverbial pendulum far from the middle. I believe what we are to see in the next number of years will move that now-wildly-swinging pendulum to more of a balance. The start-point to find a balance for that pendulum is to reinstitute cursive writing in schools and to teach the children to make longer upper loops, thereby fostering an interest far-reaching ideas, values and philosophies. This will give them a stronger focus they can apply other learning, and will provide a short respite from their many technological diversions. A longer, stronger attention span will, no doubt be an added benefit.

Little regard has been given to the interrelationships of handwriting development and reading, spelling and composition. As a result many kids educated in the last two decades cannot write in or even read cursive. Many policy decisions were made without researching the possible impact on young students who are still developing their reading, writing, and motor skills. Specifically, how these skills relate to cursive handwriting instruction. That may be changing. The Educational Summit titled "Handwriting in the 21st Century" held in Washington, D.C. included the attendance of professors, neuroscientists, teachers and interested citizens. Presenters shared cross-disciplinary handwriting research and attendees voiced their opinions about whether-and how-this skill should be taught.

Smaller children are masters at sensing weakness. Give them something to avoid - an energized execution of a well-planned day. They will sense that you are in the teaching zone and will show more respect for your strong presence as you work through your plan.
